The Apology follows the personal journeys of three former “comfort women” who were among the 200,000 girls and young women kidnapped and forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II.  For over five years the director has been unpacking their painful and unresolved history, gradually winning the trust of women who survived a brutal system of mass institutionalized sex slavery, interned in military brothels throughout Japanese-occupied Asia between 1932 and 1945.
I came in later in the project to help film Grandma Cao in Yuxian, China. We went back several trips, including a fateful Chinese New Year, where information never previously mentioned was revealed.
